OR NOT TO BE, by Lynda Taylor, is a high-drama novel rich with dialogue that comes to life with Shakespeare's own words. The lively plot line follows the theory that Shakespeare was actually the Earl of Oxford with all the secrets, lies, and fainting spells requisite in a gut-wrenching page-turner.
But Taylor's true accomplishment with this book is that she creates a window into court life during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. As you read, you too shiver as whispers echo down the castle halls and you feel the cold stares of royal courtiers in your bones. Taylor also delves deeply into the powerlessness of women during this time. Even the Queen, who deftly uses her femininity to her advantage ultimately finds herself tortured within the complexity of her sex.
This is not just a book for those who believe Lord Oxford was indeed the writer of the words, "Or not to be..." but it is also for the reader who wants to feel, hear, smell, and even taste what life was like in the royal courts of England in the 16th century. Take a trip back in time, and read Lynda Taylor's, OR NOT TO BE.
Lynda Taylor's "Or Not To Be" is a rare Shakespeare-related "historical fiction" in that it develops characters, scenery, action, history and other authorship qualities in a wonderfully instructive fashion. Sure, it takes some liberties with history (e.g., an improbable, even impossible, romance of the protagonist with the Virgin Queen, yielding a bastard pretender to the throne?). But its few problems are mere quibbles compared to its many excellent qualities. As a Shakespearean researcher and author myself, as well as an aspiring novelist, I recommend this book very much for the many authorial techniques it demonstrates to us writers. Plus, the price is right reasonable, with affiliates listing it at about $10 online. Lynda Taylor has written what may well be the best historical novel to come out of the Oxfordian movement, which began nearly a century ago in 1920 - the story of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford (1550-1604) and his virtually unknown leadership, behind the scenes, of the English renaissance of literature and drama leading to the works of Shakespeare. Taylor is particularly skillful at allowing those works to illuminate the biographical and historical record and, also, at seamlessly weaving aspects of them into a compelling narrative. The result is a compression of fact and fiction that delivers a heap of truth.
At the outset we are given a Cast of Characters listing more than fifty real-life individuals who will become part of this sweeping drama. And each of the forty-three chapters begins with a place and time "Whitehall Palace, great hall, 1571 ... Savoy Apartments, London, December 1580 ... The Pyle Inn, 1586 ... Burghley House, 1596 ... Tower of London, 1601 ...."
We are taken to important scenes of history which, sadly, have been neglected because of false assumptions about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan age. One day the professors of English and History will understand the importance of these scenes and begin teaching the details of them as part of their regular courses. Meanwhile we can be grateful to Lynda Taylor, who has done the research and writing to create the most pleasurable way of absorbing the amazing, but largely unknown, true story behind the legends of the Virgin Queen and William Shakespeare.

I hate to admit it to Shakespeare scholars but I have a master's degree in fiction and haven't read one of Shakespeare's plays. We were about to read one in high school when my family moved. I avoided one MFA program because they required you take a Shakespeare class. So I've never really been exposed much to Shakespeare other than to read quotes from his works cited in talks, and in other works. Every time I began to read Shakespeare, because one must read it, the words I read felt like a foreign language, the meaning was gibberish, and so I gave up.
But having Shakespeare's words spoon-fed to me as I devoured OR NOT TO BE, reading each delicious, beautifully crafted scene set with such vivid period descriptions I fell love with the Earl of Oxford and his words and stories. I realized that he like Christ shared information through stories or parables, because he knew that not only was it unsafe to tell the plain bold truth, but he also understood that no one in England would accept the truth if it were presented to them in a straightforward manner.
As a published author who also writes to express sadness, outrage or of spiritual experiences I too have discovered the joy of using fiction as a medium which allows me the freedom to say what I could not otherwise say. So I have found Oxford to be a kindred spirit. And I would debate anyone who thinks William Shakespeare wrote all these marvelous works. Works, which I plan to revisit again, thanks to OR NOT TO BE.
I am a convert. And if Ms. Taylor can convert me, and get me to enjoy A Mid Summer Night's Dream, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet then she can entertain anyone with her excellent writing. She seamlessly weaves quotes from his works into the story line, so that I began to see just how important his words/were and are. Now I get him. Now I see what he was trying to say. If you want to take a time travel journey to Shakespeare's England, and learn what people ate, wore, read and even what they smelled like; all told with lovely specific sensory details, and most importantly want to learn what historical events inspired the greatest writer of all times, then I can highly recommend OR NOT TO BE by Lynda Talyor.Converting Kate
